Running inspiration: Tasti D and blogger playlists

Yesterday I went for a quick Tasti D run. I hadn’t done one in so long, and Boston doesn’t even have Tasti D! I know, unbelievable. To any of my Boston readers: what kind of all-natural low-cal frozen yogurt is in Boston and where can I get it? I checked for Wow Cow and it seems to be in Needham, which sounds far. I’m living/working/working out in Boston proper, so if you know any places, let me know! Robeks is awesome but not quite the same as creamy froyo goodness.

I had planned to do a really long run (17 miles) yesterday, both in order to see if I could do it, and to see the hot guy who works at the Runners Station. However, I got swamped with work and did not finish until about 4:30 PM. I really wanted to run, but it was getting dark and I also had lots of packing to do for this week (I’m going on a ski trip instead of home this weekend, so I had to pack for two weeks of business clothes plus one weekend of ski clothes/hot tub clothes). When I called the Tasti D at 54th and 8th, I found out they had Apple Pie, which is easily one of the best flavors. I quickly donned my running clothes and headed out.

The run was nice – the weather was cool but not windy, and I didn’t really get stuck at traffic lights. Traffic lights and tourists are the main reasons I don’t run on the city streets very much, and tend to run either in Central Park or over on the Hudson River Parkway. I debated getting the Tasti D to go, but decided that since I hadn’t had it in so long, I would treat myself and sit there to enjoy it before running back. And by treat myself, I mean not look like a crazy person in a track suit with an iPod running… while carrying a cup of frozen yogurt.

While I was sitting there, I was thinking about running, and marathons, and contemplating what I should pick for my first. I thought about how much I love Tasti D, and how much I love running to get Tasti D (because I feel both productive and indulgent). And then it hit me. Maybe I could design my own marathon, at which I could get Tasti D instead of Gatorade and Clif Bars. Not necessarily a “real” marathon… but I bet I could map out a course of the city that stopped at every Tasti D and was 26.2 miles long.

This map is yet to be developed, but I do think I’m going to do this someday. It would probably be about break even calorie-wise, becaues I’d guess that Tasti Ds are an average of a mile apart (~100 calories), and the average small cup of Tasti D has about 80 calories. But how fun would that be? I could even make some kind of shirt that I could have the employees at each one sign. The “entry fee” would be $3 x 26 Tasti Ds, or $81 – not bad. To achieve this, I would have to make sure to pick only the Tasti Ds that have smalls for $3, and skip the rip-off ones like Times Square that not only has tourists to slow me down but also charges $3.50 for a small. (They do usually have the biggest variety of flavors though). And hey, this would probably be a great first step to getting Tasti D to sponsor me and give me free ice cream for life!

In other news, I’m a little bit sick today. I have that tickle in my throat that means I’m about to be a lot sick tomorrow, so I’m trying to take it easy with the workouts. This week I’m back in the treadmill room at the Westin instead of the bike room though, and it’s hard for me to resist a workout (in fact, I’m walking at 4 MPH while typing this entry). So I opted for a quick one.

Topher posted a playlist on his blog today, and I realized I had a lot of the songs on it, so I thought maybe I’d copy it. It wasn’t till I actually opened up iTunes to make my “Topher’s Dreadmill” playlist that I realized I actually only had a few of the songs he named, even though I had others by the same artists. So I did a speedy 1.5 mile run in 11:04. Woo I’m getting fast! (And yes, I set the incline on the treadmill to 1.0 so I wasn’t cheating by having lack of wind resistance). It was a good playlist, and definitely fun to run to something that I knew another running blogger had recommended. Is it a crazy running blogger thing to steal other bloggers’ playlists as motivation to be able to post that you too ran to that playlist?

  1. Copying playlists is a lot better than getting up at 4 a.m. to 1.) catch up on runner blogs and 2.) go run in the snow before any other human has touched it. Now that’s insane.

    Happy/safe travels!!

  2. I’ve never heard of Tasti D but I am in the south, and suppose it’s not around here. you’ve peaked my interest. I think that is an excellent idea! Run and stop at everyone. You gotta fuel during the marathon, right?

I always wondered how the westin rooms with the workout equipment was. Nice! I bet it’s hard to lay on the bed seeing that treadmill sitting over there.

Good luck on picking a full!

  3. I’ve never heard of TastiD either, but now I feel rather jealous from your great description! I do enjoy a McD’s ice cream cone, but I doubt that’s really the same.

I love hearing other people’s play lists, it helps me come up with new songs!

  4. For everyone who is wondering what Tasti D-Lite is, check out their website. They have locations in New York (including upstate), Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, and Texas. If you live or are traveling to any of those places, I highly recommend a stop.

If anyone else has vices that they could make a run out of (e.g. I think Topher said the Dunkin’ Donuts is about 30 miles from his house, so maybe he could start 4 miles closer and just run there?), maybe we can plan a virtual vice marathon. Something to consider…

  5. I dig the “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style marathon.

Here in the Sort-of-Dirty South, we have a Krispy Kreme 10k, where you run a 5K, have to eat a dozen Krispy Kremes, then run back. Fastest time (eating included) wins.

  6. Ooh! I have just found ur BLOG, and I think we might have something in common! LOL

Hi from Australia! Drop by my BLOG sometime!
