My next crazy adventure

So, forget the heat training and forget Vegas. I have new plans for the weekend of June 28, and they involve pirates, cross-country travel, and my second marathon!

That’s right, the Seafair Marathon is my newest crazy challenge idea. It’s also one of my last opportunities to do a marathon before September, as there are very few marathons (except Running With the Devil) in the summer due to the heat. Seattle shouldn’t be too hot, and it sounds really pretty as well. And I’ve never been there and I’ve always wanted to go!

My friend Nick (of The Desk Orphan) is going to come with me to ensure that I don’t die… or that if I do die, at least I don’t die alone. He also promises to treat me to ice cream after. We’re excited to ride the SLUT all over town the day before the marathon. (I bet that’s the first time someone has written that. I also bet that my search engine keyword analysis is going to change dramatically based on that sentence.)

I’ll be telling my mother that I’m only going out there for a half-marathon; that way she won’t have a heart attack. Other logistics: hotel is booked, flight is booked, rental car is booked. The only thing that’s not booked yet is the marathon itself, so there is still time for you to leave a comment begging me to do the half-marathon instead of the full. Though I’d prefer you to encourage my shenanigans 🙂

  1. You know Laura, after your Vermont experience and two races in one day…you’re too hardcore for me to comment on whether you should run the half or the full…but since there’s ice cream involved, I’d vote for the full!

  2. Oh my gosh – another marathon this quickly after?

(Motherly voice) Are you sure you are allowing yourself enough time to recover in between? You don’t want to burn out.

(Friend voice) That’s awesome! Kick ass – even if it’s the half.

  3. Ohhhhh, Seafair Marathon. I should do this next year. Thanks for mentioning about this. After you do this, let me know how you like it and I will consider doing this next year.

  4. I’m going with p.o.m (are you sure your allowing your body enough time to recover). Don’t burn yourself out!!! Regardless Seattle is gorgeous and it’ll be a great race no matter what you decide.

  5. Oh shoot! I’ll be out of town then. But I definitely want to run Seafair next year (they changed the course for this year; it now runs across the 520 floating bridge). Since it’s the new course I have no idea how hilly it is (I ran the half on the old course and it was quite hilly).

As for weather, it’s really a crapshoot. It could be hot, it could be cold, it could be rainy (and knowing Seattle, it could be all three!)

  6. Oh, pshaw. You’re young, your body will recover. Live it up.

If I tried that at 46, my knees would almost certainly explode. Right there on the course, probably at around Mile 17. But I wasn’t cool/brave enough to try distance running when I was in my 20’s, so I get to live vicariously through you. 🙂

  7. Believe it or not, I finished it last night. I just need to edit it and then add in some pictures. When you see how long it is you’ll understand why it took me so long to write it/post it 🙂

  8. whatever you end up deciding GOOD LUCK… if anyone is going to do it, its you 🙂 i have been trying to figure out my next one and there are so many 2 months after and i am scared thats too close. you will have to let me know what you think! there is another one in seattle i have been looking at on 11/30 – but thats prob too far away time wise for you 🙂
