That’s right, I’m going to Atlanta for Thanksgiving and Hawaii in December!

For Thanksgiving, I’m flying down to ATL on Wednesday night, running the marathon on Thursday morning, then jetting over to Charleston to join my brothers plus their fiancees for a guilt-free Thanksgiving feast (calories burned from 26.2 miles = lots and lots of stuffing). On Friday, I’ll spend the day trying to get bumped off flights home so that I can earn free tickets, and then on Saturday, my mom and I will have a quiet belated Thanksgiving at my apartment in New York. Two Thanksgivings! Two chances at stuffing! I can hardly wait 🙂

I’ve never been to Hawaii, but Boyfriend and I are taking several days off from work (it will be the day after I finish my stressful project) to go. My roommate also (drunkenly) signed up, which is particularly interesting since she doesn’t run marathons – she does triathlons. Her thinking is that 6 weeks is enough time to switch from three sports to one as long as her goal is simply to finish, and I think she’s right – as long as she does a sensible run/walk plan, I think she’ll be okay. See what some Halloween revelry and alcohol will do to our judgment? Speaking of which…

In addition to me as a woodchuck (yes, that is a bottle of Woodchuck Cider I am drinking), we had Boyfriend as a parrot (he toted a bottle of Parrot Bay rum, which he finished by the end of the night. A whole bottle by himself – insanity!), his roommate as Plastered Penguin, and his roommates’ girlfriend as Buzzed Bunny. Good times were had by all.

Boyfriend thought he was going to be free all weekend, but after it was too late to go to New Hampshire, his boss sent a deluge of e-mails, which sucks. However, I think it’s really for the best that I’m not running New Hampshire – a blister on my toe from last weekend is still sore even though I lanced it, so I think it’ll be good to take some time off. My middle toe and second toe lately seem to get sore after marathons, and this time a small blister developed on the end of one toe, which is normally an indication that my shoes don’t fit. However, I’ve been professionally fitted a few times, and I rotate through several pairs of sneakers so it doesn’t seem to be one specific small toe box causing the problem. Anyone have thoughts?

So no marathon this weekend, but my roommate and I are going to watch the NYC Marathon on the Upper East Side and relive the magic. I’m spending today reading A Race Like No Other, by Liz Robbins, which profiles the 2007 New York City Marathon and is getting me pretty psyched to see everything tomorrow. For anyone who is running, I will be wearing my yellow Marathon Maniacs jersey over whatever I’m wearing that day, will be standing to cheer around miles 18 and 23.5 (I’ll be looking for my old manager who is shooting for a 5 hour pace, so whenever we see him at 18 we’ll head to 23.5), and will have a big sign that says, “Run the first 10 miles with your head, the next 10 with your legs, and the last 6.2 with your heart.” It’s such a great inspirational quote, and while I know it’s not very original, it makes a great sign. Though I still wish I could find a way to put this post of Lana’s on a sign.

Speaking of which, right this second she is in the middle of the marathon part of her Ironman – please be sure to be thinking good thoughts and head over to her blog and wish her luck. And best of luck to EVERYONE running/competing this weekend – not everyone can do what you do, and whether you’re in NYC or elsewhere, I’m cheering for you 🙂

  1. Aren’t races a great excuse to travel??!!! I’d love to run a marathon in Hawaii. I LOVE Hawaii. My dad and I used to go there every year at Christmas. It was so fun to come back with a tan.

If you’re up for one in January…I’ll be in Arizona at the RnR. Supposed to be sunny and pleasant there too.

  2. Great costumes/characters for halloween. Love it!! Probably good you took this weekend off and can go cheer locally! Atlanta and Hawaii will keep you going- that’s great!

  3. Ok here I am belaboring picking one marathon to train for and you’re running one every weekend! I guess that’s why you have the crazy job and I go home at 5..you’re a nut ball whose is certainly living it up.

  4. You crazy kids. 🙂

I *do* have a thought about your blister. I switched socks at one point and that helped a lot on the blister front. I use top of the line dry running socks (no cotton), at, ahem, $3 a SOCK. But no blisters anymore!

And you know about Astroglide, right? Right? It’s amazing for preventing toe blisters…

  5. I’ll be cheering in Hawaii…around the 20 mile marker. Carry food with you, the aid stations aren’t that great (gatorade and that’s all if I remember correctly).

  6. I live in Atlanta so if you have any questions about the city, I’d be happy to answer them. A word of warning about the race, there are VERY few spectators since it’s on Thanksgiving.

  7. I am very jealous! Reading an article on a plane last year about the Honolulu marathon was what really got me thinking about one seriously….I hope to one day run Honolulu and Negril, Jamaica..another December marathon. Hope today was fun- must have been fun to be on the sidelines for once!

  8. Waking up to a trip confirmation to Hawaii doesn’t sound so bad 🙂 that will be awesome!!
if you’re still feelin a little tropical, the Disney Marathon in January looks like a blaaaast. That’s definitely another state to check off, and perfect time of the year.

  9. And people say I am crazy. Now I know why I don’t drink and surf. I tried drinking and running.
Eitherway, about the blister thing. Double layered socks like “Wright Socks” may work. Or you may want to try mole skin on the inside of your shoe. The best thins is Glide on your feet. I layer it on and that with the “Wright Socks” keeps a lot of the blisters away.

  10. Very cute costume. I might need to lean that way next year. After a few too many, I thought it was a good idea to lift my skirt up and show everyone my cute boy shorts. Of course, it wasn’t so cute.

  11. So here I am worried about not tapering enough before my marathon next weekend and you’re scheduling multiple marathons.
You’re so great and you keep me enthusiastic about my own running.

Keep up the great work and costumes and drinking 🙂

  12. Ohmigosh, that’s amazing!! I wish I had your drive… SOOO jealous that you’re running in HAWAII and that you got to see the NYC Marathon in person. Tooo cool!

I hope your blisters heal up okay and that you figure out what’s causing the problem.

  13. Great costume!

    You’re a Maniac all right. 🙂

I had to laugh at the whole RWI (Registering While Intoxicated) thing… 🙂

Be careful. One of these days you’re going to sign up for an ultra… 🙂

  14. It’s great to get drunk once in awhwile–thanks so much for supporting the marathoners. Sounds like you have a good boyfriend –is he onboard with your racing??
Great idea to go to Atlanta for thanksgiving marathon!!!! Thanks so much for supporting the NYCmarathoners!! Love your woodchuck photo. Hope you ad a fun Halloween! I love to dress up…envy your single days:)
