A crazy plan

Boyfriend sucks at planning – he prefers to do everything spur-of-the-moment. Meanwhile, I’m the queen of planning. On the subway on the way home from work, I write out to-do lists that look something like this (my list from yesterday):

6 – Travel
7 – Home, mail, e-mail, blog
7:30 – Gym (arms)
8 – Grocery, cook
8:30 – Dinner, Cook Yourself Thin
9 – Free weights, So You Think You Can Dance
11 – Cook lunch, bed

So… yeah, I’m pretty anal/organized 🙂 With regards to marathoning, I’ve been trying to get better lately about planning at least a month or so in advance to take advantage of cheaper race fees. Over the summer, it’s especially easy to plan since there aren’t many marathons to choose from. However, I still need to balance marathon trips with other plans – things like my little sister’s dance recital and Boyfriend’s brother’s wedding. It’s planning for the latter that I’m really thinking about now.

The wedding is on a Sunday, and due to Boyfriend’s penchant for not planning, I didn’t know any details beyond that. I had no idea what time it was, exactly where it was… basically nothing beyond the day and that it was somewhere in the state of New Jersey. I finally pressed him for details, because I would love to plan a marathon around that weekend, and I discovered something very interesting.

The wedding is scheduled for 2:30 PM, in the town of ***, New Jersey. Also in the town of ***, New Jersey, there is a 50K that morning at 8:30 AM.

If I can run a marathon in 4:10, then my 50K predicted finish time is 5:00, which would mean I would be done at 1:30. Assuming 15 minutes to get from the race to my hotel, 30 minutes to shower and get ready, and 15 minutes to get from the hotel to the church, it seems doable.

Maybe.

This may be the craziest stunt I’ve ever tried. Then again, it would be pretty sweet to have the wedding reception as my post-race party. No feeling guilty about the booze – I just ran 30 miles!

  1. You should totally do it! If anyone can pull it off I’m sure you can!!

I’m the same btw! I LOVE planning everything, and make lots of lists on colourful post-its 😉

  2. Fate, nuff said. Make a list of where you want to be each hour and you will have plenty of time to make the wedding, and yes, booze for days.

  3. On one hand I say do it, but the other I say don’t. The wedding will be an awesome post-race party, but do you mind taking the risk of missing some of it? What’s the terrain for the 50K? If it’s hilly or otherwise difficult, it might take longer than you may hope or expect. One never knows… I think it’d be fun to pull it off, but I think you’d have to know it means risking not making it on time.

  4. It sounds completely crazy. Which means, of course, you must try it.

Can’t wait to hear about it.

Take care, Laura, I read your most recent post about passing out and hope you will get yourself checked out if you continue to feel at all weird.

  5. having done several marathons and a fifty k, you can’t really just “add on time” and consider it all relative. It is farther, it is harder, and the course is probably not nearly as flat as a marathon. You CAN do it of course, I have no doubts about that, but just make sure you are “okay” with being an hour or so late if things don’t go as planned, you know??

  6. I think you should try it, just so you can brag if you can actually pull it off!! 😀

This would never work for me. I’d get stuck in traffic, a bird would poop on me, etc. But as RunningLaur says, weddings are almost always late starting.
