Things I learned running two marathons in two days: a how-to guide

1. If you are sick with flu, you can cure it by running a marathon in the mountains of New Hampshire in the pouring rain when it’s so cold you can see your breath. No, really – I went into it feeling terrible, and finished it feeling a thousand times better.

2. If you need to break in a new pair of sneakers, run a marathon in the rain (with plastic bags over your sock-clad feet and inside your sneakers). The rain “seasons” the shoes, and even if they’re still wet the next day, just run another marathon in them. Result: totally comfy shoes and no blisters. I’m as shocked as you are.

3. Finally, a lesson for both marathoning and life in general: it’s not about how fast you are and what time you finish (especially if you kicked ass running a tough marathon the day before). It’s not about what time you finish and where you place in your age group – all marathoners are winners and you’re going to get a medal regardless. It’s about the friends you make and the fun you have along the way.

Race reports to come!

  2. Haha, I feel like I’ve said this a million times before, but you are seriously bad ass, girl! Most people probably wouldn’t have run ONE marathon in your condition . . . but you went out and ran TWO! That is just so awesome, it kills me! Can’t wait to read the reports! 🙂

Are you seriously contemplating on doing the Amica Newport Marathon in a couple weeks? If so, you are more than welcome to join me for the trip to the Breakers.

I plan on leaving Friday the 16th and returning the 18th.

  6. Hey Laura…I lost track of you the past 6 months or so. #3…how true. I met you exactly a year ago while running the Hartford Marathon. Glad to see you’re still running marathons and still going strong. Now I’ll have to go back and catch up on your posts. Congrats on finishing 2 marathons in 2 days.

  7. Hey, Laura – I’m a total running blog lurker and have read so many of your posts! I’ll have completed 5 half marathons this year, and decided that it might be time for a full… any suggestions for a first-timer?
