Book clubs galore and a productive Thursday

Last night was a total blast! In the last year, I’ve joined a bunch of book clubs (some serious, some light). Last night, one of them met at this great Italian restaurant that offers ladies’ night on Wednesdays: all-you-can-drink house wine with the purchase of any entree. Perfect! I got a vegetable thin crust pizza and a ton of red wine – great way to get through the midweek slump 🙂

This morning, I woke up a few minutes before my alarm went off. Now, I set two alarms: one for 6:45am (my early alarm, if I decide to work out, which lately I almost never do) and one for 7:25am (when I actually need to get up). This was the 6:45am alarm that I beat, so I had plenty of time to go to the gym if I felt so inclined… but I did not feel so inclined. I also could have gotten myself together to get into work early (and therefore get out of work early), but I didn’t do that either. Instead, I messed around on my e-mail for a while and came in at the normal time.

I felt kind of bad that I hadn’t worked out, so I took the stairs from the ground floor. 11 flights is a lot! When I checked my e-mail, I found a great surprise. Pat sent an e-mail to the Minneapolis Marathon to let them know about my finish, and Amy from Team Ortho contacted me about doing a profile on the official website. How cool! To give her some background, I updated an old Q&A I had done for my boss (my company decided a few months ago that they want to profile me… more on that in future posts). I realized that some of you, especially new readers, may not know all this info about how I got started, so check it out!

The snow is falling like crazy here, but that’s not going to stop me from going to another book club. For this one, we read Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri, and I absolutely loved it. I’d highly recommend both that and The Namesake (by the same author) if you haven’t already read them. They’re beautifully written and very inspiring.

Hope you’re all having a great day! Stay warm in this storm 🙂

  1. I really liked The Namesake. I thought the movie version was disappointing and nowhere as good as the book. Is Unaccustomed Earth short stories or am I thinking of something else?

  2. Shoot I’m running 24 hours at FANS on the 5th and 6th of June. (It’s at Lake Nokomis, just north of the airport and not too far west of the Minneapolis Marathon course.) Any chance you’ll get in town early enough to stop buy and run a few laps with me?

  3. You are intense!!! Most people won’t join even ONE book club because they find it’s too much of a commitment… I finally started a book club this year and I’m loving it 🙂

I love the idea of setting two alarms… I don’t know why I never thought of that!

  4. Saundra: I typically don’t run between marathons, actually. Bad of me, I know… that’s why I tend to do best when I’m running marathons every week or two instead of spread out.

Joja: I’ll definitely consider, but haven’t made my flight plans yet. I don’t know that I’d really want to run laps, but maybe I could bring some good snacks to refuel!

  5. I love Lahiri! Namesake is such a beautiful book! Also, I loved your comment on my site today. I always want to say the same thing to people who play the “no time to cook” card. But you said it better (and nicer) than I could have! Thank you!

  6. OMG… I just read your Q&A… I wish I had known you were at the Yuma Marathon. (I did the 1/2.) I would have loved to say hi!

I liked The Namesake so I’ll have to check out the other book. I’ve always been interested in joining a book club but haven’t done it yet. Glad you’re enjoying all your clubs!

  7. I got your PR back. You always amaze me. You’ll love Minneapolis, althought you can’t really see the river from the course.

  8. Oh my gosh … I’m totally behind on your blog. Do I see you are running Team Ortho’s Minneapolis Marathon!? I do all of Team Ortho’s races — they are the best in the cities. 🙂 My eyes will be peeled for you! It’s a beautiful city and a great course. 😀

  9. Awesome! Go out with a bang in this awesome city. 😛 I think we run a similar pace, so maybe we’ll end up in the same pace group! If I find you, don’t be surprised if I request a pic with you. 🙂
