My Week in Food

This week, I’ve been out to dinner every night. First up was BLT Burger, where we were going specifically to try the alcoholic milkshakes. I ate lightly during the day in order to save up for it (yogurt for breakfast, veggie salad for lunch), so I was all set, right? Well, except that on my lunch break I read a FlyerTalk post discussing where the best onion rings in the country could be found. I had never really thought it before, but once I read the descriptions… there are a lot of ways to make onion rings! Pieced together onions or one whole ring; batter style coating or breadcrumbs; extra crispy or soft and chewy… yum. After thinking about onion rings all day long, I decided I was going to totally splurge and get them with my dinner. In the end, I was kind of disappointed – the onion rings at BLT actually weren’t that good! What a waste of calories… and now I still want to get some delicious onion rings.

On a side note for a bit of humor, I’d like to note that my milkshake (vanilla ice cream, Stoli Vanil, and oreo cookies) was called “The Shocker.” My burger (patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, no bun) was called “The Stripper.” So yes, my order consisted of The Shocker, The Stripper, and a side of onion rings! Classy.

Tuesday, I was out to dinner at a Scottish restaurant in Times Square – St. Andrew’s. I did mostly okay… at least until the dessert. I had the Cock-a-leekie soup as my appetizer, and it was delicious! I need to learn how to make this, as I think it was one of the best soups I’ve ever had. For my entree, I tried the trout stuffed with crabmeat and oatmeal, with a maple glaze, which was very unique but still probably not that bad for me. However, when it came time for dessert, I opted for the homemade ice cream sandwiches – butterscotch ice cream sandwiched between mini homemade shortbread cookies. When my plate came out, I was really disappointed to find that it had apparently been sitting around for a while – the ice cream was already melted all over the plate. Unfortunately, I made the complete wrong decision and drowned my sorrows by… eating every last cookie and trying to get as much of the melted ice cream off the bottom of the plate as possible. Textbook poor choice! Bad Laura.

On Wednesday, we had a lunch meeting for which we totally over ordered. I was good about just having half a wrap (with most of the excess tortilla ripped off) and some salad… but the massive dessert tray proved too tempting and I ended up having several cookies. Normally not a big deal, but I had a dinner to go to that night as well, so I had been trying to eat lightly for lunch. Furthermore, this was not a dinner I wanted to try to eat lightly during – we were going to Shang, Susur Lee’s restaurant.

For those of you who don’t know, Susur Lee is a renowned chef who appeared on the last season of Top Chef Masters, finishing as first runner up. Furthermore, one of his dishes received the highest rating of all time on the show – 19.5 stars (out of 20). When I looked at the menu, I discovered that one of the items was “Top Chef Chicken Curry,” and it turned out to be his award winning recipe. What could I do but order it? The dish ended up being very good, but I didn’t think it was the best thing I’ve ever eaten. However, in fairness, Susur wasn’t there that night, so maybe it wasn’t cooked as perfectly as it could have been (I found the vegetables to be a little mushy and not contrasting enough with the grits surrounding them). But continuing the binge, we went for dessert to Clinton Street Baking Company – a well-known bakery that I’ve been meaning to try but definitely did not need last night. My banana chocolate pie was delicious, but after eating my way through everything else in NYC, I think it was just too decadent!

I made sure to get in a good 45 minute (4.5 mile) workout on the elliptical this morning – definitely doesn’t cover my indulgences, but hopefully it will help. Despite how well I’ve been doing with workouts, I feel like I need to go run another marathon this weekend just to keep myself from gaining weight. Darn my ankle for not allowing me to do that! I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, so hopefully athat will help me figure out what’s wrong so I can get back to running. Consulting 15, you will not conquer me!

So… who’s got fun marathons that I should consider? My body needs them!

  2. Just to continue the eating theme, I’ve heard the Fresno marathon is great, hot breakfast AND ice cream sundaes at the finish. Bad news is, it’s not until the fall.

  3. You are too funny! I can only imaine the number of people who wish they could eat what they want and “just” go run a marathon on the weekend to balance it all out. (Myself included!). You week sounds fabulous and you totally deserve the treat!

  4. I guess I am lucky that I don’t live in NYC and can’t afford to go out anyway. Cooking for yourself is much healthier… but probably not as much fun or as delicious!

    There is a beautiful trail 50k on the central CA coast in August that you might enjoy (PCTR Montana de Oro). I know you have done some trail marathons, but a trail ultra along the Pacific might be a nice change from all the road races you did these past months.

  5. You’re so much classier than I am. I would have totally gone for a way cruder approach to the whole Shocker/Stripper/O-Ring scenario.

    My word verification is “tooter” too. Seriously. Will I ever quit giggling like a school girl?
