Crunching the numbers and burning it off

The Fit Bottomed Girls have posted a list of how far you’d have to run to burn off various Thanksgiving eats. How perfect, given that tomorrow I’m going to be running the first annual Thanksgiving Marathon in NYC (aka NYC’s only trail marathon). You can do either the full, the half, or a 10K, and given tomorrow’s forecasted rain, I am probably going to make a game time decision for what distance to do – basically to avoid getting soaked. However, this list has inspired me to figure out what I need to do in order to burn off Friday’s Thanksgiving feast.

First, let’s check out my menu:

Butternut squash soup – 102 cals/serving
Cranberry sauce – 134 cals/serving
Turkey breast – 157 cals/serving
Gravy – 64 cals/serving
Cornbread muffins – 93 cals/serving
Apple cornbread stuffing – 159 cals/serving
Green bean casserole – 76 cals/serving
Mashed potatoes – 117 cals/serving
Garlic collard greens – 67 cals/serving
Caramel pumpkin gingersnap cheesecake – 215 cals/serving

(Yes, I mostly use VERY healthy recipes for my Thanksgiving meal – I’ve linked to the recipes where applicable, but keep in mind that I “healthify” most of these from the original versions by using healthier swaps – these stats reflect those swapped figures)

So if I total it all up, assuming one serving of each, I get: 1184 calories. Using a calculation of 1.1 miles per 100 calories, I need to run 13.0 miles to burn off my meal. Half marathon, here I come!

Now the question: do I run the full marathon and take seconds? 🙂

  1. WOW, those are REALLY healthy recipies. I don’t even want to know how many calories we had in ours. Quite honestly, I’m OK with not knowing! 🙂
