I’m out of hibernation and on the move!

So I did that whole long whiny post where I asked you guys whether you want me to just keep posting inane things in the meantime while I’m working on my race reports, and you all were awesome about commenting and making me feel loved and encouraging me to just post the race reports whenever… and then I still got all caught up in the “but I want to post my race report in chronological order!” and ended up posting nothing Sunday or Monday. I am the worst 🙁 My only excuse is that work has been brutal lately (worked while in the Bahamas, worked yesterday for the holiday, worked last night till 11:30pm, and got to the office at 7:15am this morning to work more). Such is life at the end of a project, but at least I know it will calm down soon.

However, while chatting with Adam online during lunch, I IMed him a quick summary of the marathon, and it occurred to me that maybe I could just post that summary to stave off the real race report (which will come… tonight? Tomorrow? Later than that? I don’t know). I expanded upon it just slightly, but it’s nowhere near the detail of a regular race report – that will come.

Every winter, around the beginning of December, I run a marathon, and then I hibernate. As December continues, there aren’t more marathons to run, and/or I get busy (fine, lazy), but I promise myself that I’ll keep working out so I’ll be in good cardio shape come my January marathon. Every year, I fail in this promise. This year, I did a good job with continuing to work out, but I only did strength training – no running or elliptical or biking or anything like that since mid-December.

Going into the marathon, I was pretty nervous. I had a feeling that Rachel Cosgrove was going to punish me for doing steady-state cardio when she forbids it until week 8 of her (totally awesome) plan. Besides, if her plan didn’t come back to bite me in the butt, I think the fact that I procrastinated on buying new shoes and ended up wearing brand new, never-been-run-in-or-even-ever-worn-before sneakers to the race would probably do me in.

But guess what? Just like last year, I ended up winning third place. (Okay, so this year was third place in my age group and not third place overall woman, but still. I got a metal plaque and everything.)

  1. I look forward to hearing how the strength training paid off. I’m definitely going to have to look into this plan. And congrats on the award!

  2. Nice work! I was just telling my running friends with whom I roadtripped down to Charleston for the marathon that I obviously didn’t do my homework well enough regarding January marathons– I had no idea that the Bahamas Marathon was the same weekend until I read about it on your blog. Next year!

    And I have to say that I <3 Hal Higdon 🙂 But I think after 50+ marathons you probably don't need to follow anyone's advice but your own 😉
