So here’s what you missed

There’s no really easy way to post about this, so probably just best to just write the basics and then be able to move on to hopefully happier material tomorrow.

This weekend, my dad suffered a heart attack. He was taken to the hospital and made it into surgery very quickly, thank god, and damage was minimal as a result. When I finally made it up to Albany to see him, I was pleasantly surprised how lively and energetic he was, which made me so happy. The verdict is that he’s going to be just fine, though he needs to make sure to take preventative medication daily and work on some dietary changes. Like me, he’s not overweight, but does have a penchant for tasty foods!

To lighten the mood, a few funny things came out of it:

-My dad harassing the doctor about when he can go back to playing tennis (which he was doing when the heart attack occurred). The doctor told him that he needed to rest for a while first, to which my dad replied, “But it’s DOUBLES. You barely have to run at all in doubles!” Apparently I do get my sports gene from somewhere 🙂

-When discussing potential dietary changes, my dad fought back hard on the “try to limit cheese, alcohol, and red meat.” I mean, he is European after all! My dad tried to say that he didn’t need to make drastic changes and that gradually easing up should be fine – to which I pointed out that post-heart attack is exactly the time that drastic change is required. Oh, Dad!

My dad headed home from the hospital tonight, and while it’s against his nature to rest, I’ve stocked the house with some DVDs and books to keep him busy. With any luck, we can keep him from doing such “dangerous” activities as playing tennis and being active… at least for the next week!

  1. Glad to hear that it seems like everything is going to be okay! My Dad’s a tennis addict too, and I completely believe that if it were him in that situation, he’d be asking the same questions 🙂

  2. I’m sorry to hear that your dad had a heart attack, but I’m glad the damage wasn’t too severe.

My dad had a heart attack when he was 63, and he lived another 25 years. It helped that he made changes to his diet and started getting more exercise.

  3. Thank goodness your dad is OK! So scary. His reactions sound exactly like what my dad said to the doctors when he had a triple bypass (no heartattack, but almost). “Get me out of the hospital, there are too many old and sick people here!!”
