My DietBet has been going great so far – as I wrote on Thursday, I’ve really been sticking to it in the last week! Even leading up to the marathon I ran yesterday (race report coming), I carb loaded without overloading on calories… and post-race, I only indulged mildly in a pulled pork sandwich and a beer before going back to a super healthy salad for dinner. I feel great!

Although there are some things about my body that I think could be improved, on the whole, I have to say I’m pretty happy with it. I’m thrilled that it’s a body that carried me through a full marathon yesterday (and I’m not even sore today!). I love that I can take my body to just about any workout out there and know that I at least won’t be embarrassed by how weak I am. And all this is definitely a change from a few years ago, as my former roommate Ali reminded me on Facebook when she saw a picture of me doing 25 pushups after my marathon to earn a case of Chobani.

25 pushups for a case of Chobani - DONE!

I couldn’t even do one full-body pushup when I was in college! I was pretty darn proud to bang out my 25 without a problem, especially right after finishing a full marathon :)

So while lately you see articles all over the place about “getting in shape for swimsuit season.” I want to assure you all that is not my intent. Honestly, I don’t really understand all the attention we give to swimsuits and how they fit. To me, shopping for a swimsuit is no different than shopping for a pair of jeans: there are going to be some that look great on you, and some that don’t look so good. But the fault doesn’t lie with your body; it lies with the swimsuit. People don’t think twice about trying a different cut of jean to find one that’s more flattering, so why do we get upset with our bodies when they don’t fit into every single bikini on the rack?

That’s why I was really excited when Figleaves contacted me about trying their swimwear. Unlike a lot of manufacturers that give you a three-sizes-fit-all model in the form of S, M, and L, Figleaves offers bra-sized swimwear to ensure a perfect fit for all body types. Cup sizes range from AA-GG, and styles range from bikinis to tankinis to one-pieces, so there’s something for every level of comfort.

Since I already have quite a few bikinis in my drawer, I decided to opt for a one-piece this time. When I’m hanging out at the pool/beach and I want to be really active, I’ve often felt a little uncomfortable in a bikini, because there isn’t enough support and I’m worried that it might come off, depending on my activity. (Almost had an oops moment like that while hanging out at my friends’ hot tub yesterday, and my top didn’t want to come out of the water when I did, coming drastically low before I rescued it. Whoops!) My only concern was finding a one-piece that would still be fashionable –something that I felt like I looked good in instead of it being seen as a backup choice for not being comfortable with a bikini. Well, after perusing the Figleaves storefront, I feel like I found a winner!

First of all, I have to note that I really appreciated that the models on Figleaves looked pretty healthy. (They were definitely still much slimmer than me, but I appreciated that they had busts that filled out the suit so I’d get some idea of what it looked like on me, rather than the waif-like figures that normally model clothes.) I measured myself with a tape measure to figure out the appropriate size – and though it was slightly larger than expected (since this particular suit had European sizing), I didn’t care. In these days of vanity sizing, why on earth do we care about the numbers on our clothing? I would much rather be in something that fits my body well and is size 99 than get something with a low number that just doesn’t work for my body. What matters is how it looks on your body, not what’s on the tag that no one sees anyway.

So how did it look on me?

Figleaves Tuscany Striped Swimsuit

I love it!

This Tuscany stripe one-piece may not be the kind of swimsuit that most people think of when trying to get in shape for swimsuit season, but I love it. I really like anything nautical-themed these days (and have far too many striped/anchor-print/rope-print shirts to prove it), and I like the preppiness of the clean navy and white lines. The navy top deemphasizes the chest, which is exactly what I want to wear when I want to be having fun and not attracting unwanted attention, and the magenta cording adds a little bit of fun and femininity. I love this suit, and can’t wait to wear it all summer long! (P.S. Colorado friends – get psyched for some pool party invites coming your way soon.)

This swimsuit is incredibly comfortable to wear for lots of activities – while still being cute and flattering, I really like that I can wear it for swimming laps in the pool or other more active pursuits than just lying around tanning. (Because in Colorado, there is absolutely no need for that! I get tan whether I want to or not just by stepping foot outdoors… that sun is strong!) And heck, maybe wanting to wear this suit for lap swimming will even get me in the mood to start training for a triathlon? We’ll see…

If you’re also on the hunt for a new suit, Figleaves is offering a 10% discount on all full-priced items from now until June 15; just enter promo code LOVE2014 when you check out.

As previously noted, I participated in this campaign on behalf of Millennial Central for Figleaves. I received product samples to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item as a thank you for participating. All opinions expressed are my own and I was not pressured for a positive review.

  1. You look amazing and that bathing suit is so chic! What a fab one piece! I need something like that for my beach days. Bikinis are great for when I just want to be straight up lazy and lay around – but I am usually up and down and can’t sit still so something that is cute and functional (without being a speed-o!) is a must.

    • AWw, thanks, Gianna! I haven’t had a one piece before (outside of a Speedo) so I am thrilled to find this.
