Running With, and For, Others: Skechers GOrun3

Friday night I indulged a bit more than usual at happy hour (having delicious take out restaurants in Union Station where I catch the bus home is dangerous when I’m waiting), and I woke up on Saturday morning knowing that I should get a solid workout in to help counteract the effects. I had already committed to meeting my Saturday morning running group at Roadrunner Sports in Westminster, but when I woke up, it just seemed like it was cold out and maybe running outside wasn’t such a great idea. I totally considered bailing, but made the smart choice not to do so and to just head down for the run. Boy, am I glad I did! That extra pizza actually put a lot of pep in my step, so I felt like I had plenty of energy, the day was gorgeous, and the company was fantastic. If it hadn’t been for my commitment to the running group, I probably wouldn’t have gone, so I was really grateful that I had them to motivate me when I otherwise wasn’t feeling it myself.

Westminster Fall Leaves
And if I hadn’t gone, I would have missed this. How beautiful are these fall colors, especially set against that perfect blue sky?!

There is so much talk about doing things for yourself – and I’ve heard a lot of people express the opinion that if you’re not internally motivated, you won’t get anywhere. I think there is absolutely something to be said for internal motivation: if you’re going after a big goal, you need something in you in order to keep yourself going when it gets tough. But sometimes, I think it’s totally fine (and even good) to rely on external motivation to get you to do something. Sometimes it can be even more powerful when you’re running for someone else, because you don’t want to disappoint them and so you push harder than you would just for yourself.

One charity that I have always been passionate about is the American Cancer Society. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, and it was a really scary time for us until she was finally declared cancer-free. Sadly, some of my friends weren’t so lucky, and lost their moms to devastating battles with breast cancer. Over the last few years, I’ve been honored to have the opportunity to participate in numerous walks and runs to help find a cure for cancer, and so I’m happy today to partner with Skechers in honor of breast cancer awareness month.

Skechers Performance Division just launched a line of new products to create awareness and raise funds for the American Cancer Society. All of the shoes are a heather gray and pale pink color scheme, while prominently featuring the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon. While Skechers’ main motivation for putting out this collection is to support a great cause, Skechers also wants to help women live healthier lives in general. The shoes come in several different styles: GOrun3 (running), GOfit (cross training), GOwalk2 (walking), and GOrun Sprint (sprinting). There are also a few tanks, tee, and leggings as part of the collection. I was able to try out the GOrun3 sneakers as part of my collaboration with Skechers.

I love the muted pink and gray colors, and also how the pink ribbon for breast cancer is highlighted on the back of the shoe.

The GOrun3 is very lightweight, at only 5.7 ounces, and has only a 4mm heel drop – so you feel pretty low to the ground and flat-footed, almost minimalist. However, it’s actually got moderate cushioning thanks to a proprietary lightweight injection-molded compound with memory retention that helps to absorb shock. The upper is nearly seamless, made of mesh, and it’s pretty roomy, especially in the toebox. It almost felt more like a casual shoe to me than a running shoe, especially since I usually go with stability models! But the technology is there, so I think this could be a great addition to my arsenal of running shoes for days when I’m running less than 10 miles (so basically, every day as of late)… and most importantly, when I want to promote breast cancer awareness and make sure that people understand how important it is for us to put resources toward finding a care.

Skechers Performance Division proudly supports American Cancer Society in the fight against breast cancer with a special collection of products. Each shoe celebrates those who use sports and fitness to lead an active, healthy lifestyle – so basically, all of us! Skechers Performance Division’s support will help the American Cancer Society continue to invest in ground breaking research, provide comprehensive support to people diagnosed with breast cancer, and advocate for laws that ensure access for women who need it so more lives are saved.

In addition to the “Awareness” footwear and apparel line, Skechers Performance Division is supporting the American Cancer Society in several ways:

  • Skechers Performance Division is offering a donation to American Cancer Society, and all of the Skechers Performance Division Awareness apparel and footwear will feature the ACS logo and messaging.
  • Skechers is hosting the American Cancer Society San Francisco Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, and will be donating a percentage of proceeds from the sales of Skechers shoes on-site that day.
  • Skechers is launching a register round-up program in Skechers Retail stores in which customers can round up their purchase to the nearest whole dollar to benefit American Cancer Society for the entire month of October. If you donate $5 or more, you’ll also receive a 20% off discount for your next visit! This will offer anyone shopping for any item in a Skechers retailer store the opportunity to give back and support the cause.
  • Skechers Retail stores are offering a gift with purchase for customers who purchase a pair of limited-edition Awareness shoes. The gift with purchase will be either a breast canvas awareness canvas tote back or a pink water bottle, depending on the store.

Thank you to Skechers for sponsoring today’s discussion and helping to raise breast cancer awareness as well as the importance of promoting overall women’s health!

Disclaimer: Skechers provided me with a pair of Skechers GOrun3 shoes as well as compensation for this post. However, all opinions stated are my own, and I accepted this collaboration in large part because I feel strongly about breast cancer awareness and raising money to fight for a cure.

  1. My mom and I have done the Relay For Life several years. In fact, she is on a regional advisory team for the Relay and helps other cities with their Relays. All because of her multiple breast cancer diagnoses. I’m glad your mom beat it, cancer sucks for everyone involved.

    1. That’s really awesome that your mom is on the regional advisory team too! I hope she stays cancer-free and that with the help of ACS and other organizations we someday find a way to beat this awful disease.
