The Double Whammy of a Sleep Shortage

The beginning of my week when I’m on the road is rather rough. Every Monday, I catch a 6am flight to my client, which means I have to get up around 4am to be out of the house and on my way to the airport by 4:20am. (Yes, I keep my Monday morning routine as short as possible.) This week, unfortunately, I set my alarm wrong and accidentally got up at 3am instead of 4am – and got as far as brushing my teeth and putting my contacts in before I realized my mistake. D’oh! I tried to go back to bed, but ended up mostly just tossing and turning for the extra hour. #SleepFail

However, the day after a bad night’s rest I am usually fine. So yesterday, I wrapped up work and then went to the gym, squeezing in two classes (cardio dance and power yoga) in an attempt to catch up on the Grit Fitness FallN2Fitness Challenge. However, by the time I got dinner after class and chatted with Adam for a bit, I didn’t get to bed until 11:30pm – meaning I didn’t get to catch up at all on the sleep I had missed Sunday night. Oops!

I went to the gym this morning as usual, but I did not feel my usual self – I was so tired and just couldn’t wait for the workout to be over. I tried to push it as much as I could, reminding myself of the Grit Fitness motto, but I still could tell my performance was affected. The number of pushups I could do was dismal, and whenever it came to a cardio segment, I was too spent to make it all the way through without a break 🙁

Brit’s studio has great motivational signs all over it, like this one explaining the name. Unfortunately, all the words in the world couldn’t help my exhaustion this morning.

After class, I went to work and found myself tempted all day by the snack table near my desk. It’s kind of a cruel joke, isn’t it, that lack of sleep gives you less energy for a workout yet also makes you crave calories? I have been trying to get away from any kind of snacking in between meals, but today I gave in and had some almonds, an apple, and two pizzelle cookies over the course of the day. Oops! I knew that I was eating because I was tired and not because I was hungry, but I still couldn’t resist.

So with that realization, I think it’s time for an early bedtime. I need some energy to fuel my workout in the morning, and some willpower to keep my diet in check tomorrow, and sleep will definitely help with both. Good night!

  1. It seems that whenever I fall behind on sleep, I can’t catch up until the weekend – and even then it is tough because my son is an early riser. We’ll have to plan for you to catch up this weekend for sure.

Since I haven’t been running (and therefore exhausted I guess?), I’ve found myself sleeping rather restlessly for the last few months. It is especially frustrating because I don’t seem to get a ton of sleep anyway.

    1. I find that the older I get, the harder it is to “catch up.” (Which is supported by science, though age doesn’t have anything to do with it.) I am really looking forward to sleeping well this weekend though!
