What I Read in May 2022

June 24, 2022 By laura 2 Comments

Best_Books_Of_May_2022

Oops, a bit behind in getting this post up! I read a lot in May once again - 15 books - keeping me well ahead of my 100 book goal for the year. 5 stars: Mad Honey, by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan: I LOVED this thought-provoking novel and read it in one night! Teen hockey player Asher is deeply in love with his girlfriend Lily, and Asher's beekeeper mom Olivia is thrilled... until she gets a call that Lily is dead, and Asher is wanted for questioning. It's hard to write much about the plot without giving spoilers, but this riveting novel will make you think about how well you really know someone, how much of who we are is inherited from our parents, and whether / how much people can change. While I didn't particularly enjoy Jodi Picoult's last novel, "The Book of Two Ways", this took me back to the classic Picoult plots I originally fell in love with that make me cite her as my absolute favorite author; it's legal battle around a moral issue, with some big twists to keep you guessing. The moral issues touched upon made me rethink some of my own beliefs, as Picoult once again proved herself a master at providing nuanced perspectives without hitting you over the … [Continue reading]

Race Report: Bolder Boulder 10K

BolderBoulder_2022_Finish (1)

After my last post, I thought I was on the mend. My business trip was mostly successful, and for about a week, I got my crying time down to 1-3 hours a day. That may sound bad, but I thought it was amazing compared to what it was before. Crying for only a few hours today meant that I could work, could exercise, could start trying to repair friendships... and it felt manageable, at least in the short term. Then on Thursday, I woke up at 4am in my hotel room in Chicago, crying hysterically. Why? I don't know. There were only two things I could possibly think of that made me sad. First, a call with my new therapist on Wednesday didn't go well, which made me wonder if she was really a good fit or if I'd need to find someone else. And second, after a night out with my team on Wednesday, they freaked out about me walking 1/2 mile back to my hotel in Chicago, warning me that cities had gotten much more dangerous and insisting that I take an Uber. When I posted about this on Instagram Stories, I had several people corroborate the warning - with one saying that the week before, she had been on a business trip in the same area (River North) and a man was literally set on fire outside her … [Continue reading]

What I Read in April 2022

Best_Books_Of_April_2022

Well, I hit a record in April, reading 20 books over the course of the month! It was definitely an unprecedented month - I didn't go back to work until the end of the month, and I had to isolate at home for several weeks for my IVF procedure, so there was a lot of bored time where I buried myself in books. I don't anticipate to be able to hit this volume in any future months, but it was a good way to catch up / get ahead on my 100 book goal for the year. 4 stars: With Love from Wish & Co., by Minnie Darke: This reminded me a lot of a Liane Moriarty novel, with all the interesting family dynamics, and I really enjoyed it! Marnie owns a small boutique, and her specialty is not just curating interesting items, but providing personal gift buying services for her clients. One of her clients has her regularly buy gifts for both his wife AND his mistress... and one disastrous day, Marnie mixes up the gifts, blowing up her client's marriage. In spite of that excitement, I found the book started a bit slow, but a midway through, it picked up and became hard to put down. (I actually had the same feedback about Darke's last book, "The Lost Love Song"... perhaps she could benefit … [Continue reading]

Stuck in a Liminal Space

May 16, 2022 By laura 4 Comments

Post_Egg_Retrieval

I'm now more than a month post-egg retrieval, but the truth is that I've spent several months feeling like I'm in a "liminal space", just sitting and waiting for things to happen. It's not my usual MO - I'm someone who likes to be busy, busy, busy, and it's taken a lot of urging from my therapist to remind me that refusing to slow down is what burned me out in the first place. But while my new "get comfortable with not achieving things" philosophy worked well for me in January (and maybe even part of February), by March, I was itching to get back to normal. Unfortunately, March is when I started taking hormones in preparation to freeze my eggs - and that's when things went really haywire. At first, it was minor discomfort - some rapid weight gain that made me feel kind of gross, but that I knew would go away once the process was all over. I mentioned to my nurse that I was a little surprised by how poorly I was tolerating the "priming" meds they put me on before the real "stimulation" meds to grow my eggs, and I asked if that meant I was going to have an extra hard time with stims - but she said no, they expected me to be just fine. In retrospect, I think that was the start of … [Continue reading]

Planning for More Time Doing Nothing

April 9, 2022 Leave a Comment

I recently read and loved this article by Nir Eyal on how Planning Ahead Is the Key to Living With More Spontaneity. The title is intriguingly contradictory, but it's something I've known about myself for a while: if I can strictly plan everything I have to do (with the help of a to-do list or … [Read more]

What I Read in March 2022

April 1, 2022 Leave a Comment

In March, I finally got back on track with my reading, and read 10 books. I've really enjoyed carving out more time for reading, and I was happy that I included a few nonfiction books instead of all light escapist novels (even though I still love those). Looking forward to keeping up with these … [Read more]

Reacting to Another Fire

March 27, 2022 1 Comment

Yesterday started out well. First thing in the morning, Sadie and I stopped by Red Rocks Park for a trail run. I've spent the first three months of the year either focused on fire recovery and not working out, or up in the mountains to ski, so this was actually my first trail run of the year. And it … [Read more]

Last week, I was lucky enough to get interviewed by Ali Feller for her popular Ali on the Run podcast. It was so much fun, and I was delighted to see it launch today! You can catch the show yourself here. However, the conversation flew by too quickly for me to get everything perfect; I sometimes … [Read more]

Final Hurrah of the Skison: Steamboat, Bluebird Backcountry, and Avalanche Preparedness

March 23, 2022 2 Comments

This weekend, I headed out to the mountains - but not to the Vail Valley. Instead, my boyfriend and I headed out to the Steamboat Springs area, where we spent Friday skiing Steamboat resort, and Saturday and Sunday trying out backcountry skinning / skiing... and taking an avalanche preparedness … [Read more]

Hello Again – After the Fire

March 7, 2022 2 Comments

Well, hello everyone. It's been a while. Let's catch up? (Warning: long post ahead. Consider it a makeup for the last eight months of silence.) Last summer, like many people staying in the same job through "The Great Resignation", I started getting more and more burned out at work. Where in … [Read more]
