The Power of a Lunch Break

Since starting my project in Dallas this fall, I’ve made a conscious effort to take a break for lunch every day. Sometimes I get lunch with a colleague, sometimes I catch up on blogs on my phone, and frequently I read a few chapters of a book on my Kindle. Plus, whenever possible, I try to go to a fast food place in the area rather than eating at the cafeteria, so that I also can drive and get a little bit of alone time in the car. It is bliss to get that kind of a break in my work day, …

Is My Vacation Balance a Measure of Work-Life Balance?

Leaving_Work_To_Check_Email

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just about here, and New Year’s is also fast approaching. Where did the year go?! I’ll save the recap/goal posts for next week, but I wanted to talk a little bit now about my upcoming vacation. At my company, we implement a “firmwide shutdown” starting on Christmas Day and running all the way through New Year’s Day. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling… 32

Lately I haven’t been fulfilling my New Year’s resolution of listening to TED talks in the morning while I get ready for the day. Instead, I’ve been listening to the “Today’s Happy Pop” station of Google Music. Maybe not quite as intelligent, but it definitely gets me energized for the day! As a result of this morning’s playlist, I have had Taylor Swift’s “22” stuck in my head most of today… …except I don’t feel 22. I feel 32, or maybe even 42. (Obviously that’s because I AM SO OLD.) Since coming back to my client in Dallas, things have definitely changed. When …

Driving Toward No Goal At All

Laura_Realization_Point

One of the speakers I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with at Discover is Jullien Gordon, a professional career coach and speaker who’s been featured in Forbes and Under 30 CEO. Jullien has some great lessons on developing your personal definition of success and going after what you want, rather than copying someone else’s definition of success – which may or may not make you happy. When I went through the Discover program a few years ago, Jullien’s message really resonated with me. Even though I was doing things seemingly for myself at the time, I realized that I was actually doing things …
