Race Report: Election Day

Laura_Victory_Livestream

I’m titling this a race report, because, my gosh, running for office was one of the toughest races I have ever run, even if wasn’t literal running! Most of my weekend recaps have already recapped what the race itself was like, but I wanted to take some time to blog about Election Day, which was truly special. The night before, my friend Chris was texting me that she couldn’t believe Election Day was already here. She was almost more excited than I was, while I was in disbelief that all the campaigning was finally over! I had a little bit …

Weekend Recap: Catching a Breath on the (Campaign) Trail

I went into this weekend thinking I was barely going to have time to breathe, but fortunately, I ended up with more down time than I expected! Friday was admittedly very jammed… a few meetings ran over, and since my schedule was back-to-back-to-back, I didn’t have time to make up for anything I missed and ended up having to reschedule till this week. Oops! But I did get a ton of stuff done, including hosting a fabulous book club at my office to discuss The Opposite of Hate. I’ll cover this in my What I Read in September post (particularly since …

Laura_at_Mile_1.5_Superior_5K

Although I had slept a ton in the days before the race, I woke up Sunday morning feeling pretty terrible. I was kind of hot and tired, and I half-wondered if I had a fever… but forgot to take my temperature to find out for sure. (I did later learn that my resting heart rate was a whopping 45bpm, which is a RHR I haven’t seen in weeks… I’m usually 39-41, and haven’t been over 43 since early July.) Instead, I hurriedly got ready for the race, making a to-go mug (this is the best ever!) of coffee to take …

1-Mile Benchmark Run and Upcoming Races

Orangetheory_Benchmark_1_Mile_521

Yesterday, Orangetheory Fitness had one of their benchmark workouts. These are mini-challenges that we repeat a few times a year, to see what kind of progress we’re making. I never get too excited about the rowing benchmarks, but I am all over the running benchmarks, and yesterday was my favorite one: the one mile run. A mile is kind of a scary distance to race. As Adam told me years ago, you basically have to go out as fast as you can, and then when it sucks… you keep going at that pace. (Or at least that’s how it works …

My Next Big Challenge

LauraForSuperiorCover

Today is my 33rd birthday, and I’m thrilled to announce my next big challenge. In elementary school, they would ask one question each year of every student for the yearbook. In kindergarten, I said that when I grew up, I wanted to be the first female president of the United States… and also a ballerina. My dreams and goals have changed a lot over the last few decades – like when I went from being a nerdy non-athletic bookworm to breaking a world record in running! But today, I’m proud to announce a new goal. This fall, I’ve decided to run …
