Thursday night kicked off my second ever Ragnar Relay experience. Although this time was with many of the same coworkers from when I ran Ragnar Chicago last year, this year’s race was totally different – we had signed up for a trail Ragnar in Richmond, Virginia! Trail Ragnar Relays are very different from road Ragnar Relays. On the road, you and your teammates are all in a van, while one person runs. At designated exchanges, another team member jumps out {Read More}
Weekend Recap: Running a Campaign and a Race
While my last few weekends have had a lot of downtime and unplanned activities, this weekend was the opposite – a whirlwind of plans and commitments that barely let me be home. But I loved every minute of it! To be fair, I kicked off this weekend with a lot of downtime and relaxation. Earlier this year, I decided it was silly that I’ve been working in Florida less than a half mile from the beach, and yet I never {Read More}
Weekend Recap: SPG Life
My “weekend” started a little bit early this week, as I took Friday off work to go to the beach. I decided last month that it was silly that I’ve been working in Florida for 1.5 years and have barely seen the ocean, so I am now trying to take one Friday off a month to stay in Florida and enjoy the beach! Last time I stayed at the Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach; this time, I stayed two doors down {Read More}
Weekend Recap: Summer is (Almost) Here!
This weekend started earlier than most! I’ve been desperately needing a vacation for a while, but last month, realized that taking a day off every month was probably going to be the best I could do for a while. I was booked for training all day Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, and the session wrapped up too late for me to catch a flight home that night, so I decided to stick around, take a half day on Friday, and spend {Read More}
Weekend Recap: Solo Ski Getaway
Last weekend was pretty spectacular, and it helped me start this week feeling refreshed… and hopeful about a new direction I’m planning to take going forward. Work has been pretty intense lately, and while I’ve fit in time for fun on weekends, there hasn’t been a single day in the last month that I haven’t had to do a few hours of work to keep things afloat. I know that I have workaholic tendencies, but when I discussed my weekend {Read More}
Conquering My Colorado Summer Bucket List
This weekend was my first back in Colorado in seemingly forever, since I was only home for 18 hours last weekend. And as a bonus burst of excitement, this was a holiday weekend! My office is closed for a five day weekend (Saturday through Wednesday), and most people are taking off Thursday and Friday as well so I’ll probably only work a few hours each day and then take PTO for the rest. What a treat to be home and {Read More}
Time Off: Some Planned, Some Unplanned
It’s been a little while since I’ve blogged outside of my Links posts, huh? I was lucky enough to spend last week down in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, for my family’s annual beach vacation. Several years ago, my dad booked a condo on Seabrook Island for a spring break getaway that was driveable from upstate New York. (A very long drive, but driveable nonetheless.) Seabrook is about 30 minutes south of Charleston, where my brother Erik lives with his family, so {Read More}
Dream Vacation: Booked!
Despite the many articles I’ve read about vacation being important for productivity (to help you rest and recharge), I am admittedly terrible at actually taking my vacation time. Because I travel so much for work, all I want from “vacation days” is time at home. With that being fairly date-agnostic (no flights or hotels to book), I often end up delaying the “scheduling” part of the vacation process as well. My thinking is that since I can take my vacation anytime, {Read More}
Puerto Vallarta: No Regrets
This was not the vacation I was expecting… but that’s okay. I wasn’t expecting to get sick within 6 hours of arriving in Mexico. (My own fault for eating sushi that I should have known was bad.) I spent all Thursday night getting sick everywhere, including a mortifying public vomiting incident in the trash can at the convenience store when I went to get Gatorade. On Friday, although I wasn’t getting sick anymore, I still felt pretty crappy and didn’t really get {Read More}
Emphasizing my OOO
Last Thursday, I got a reminder from my company to check out my “total rewards” page on the intranet. I dutifully went to the page to make sure that my 401k and other investment allocations were where I wanted them to be, and I happened to glance over to another part of the page and see my vacation balance. As luck would have it, I had just earlier that day finished reading an interesting article in the Harvard Business Review {Read More}
