Navigating the Midlife Crossroads

Laura_Teaching_Skiing_On_Highlands_Lift

I just reread my New Year’s post, and while it ended on a positive note, it was definitely a bit of a downer. I was excited that things were trending upwards, but also afraid that they wouldn’t stay that way. What calamities were still to come?! But I’ve now gotten through February, and things have indeed been getting better and better. As I’ve discussed with my therapist, I keep thinking, “ah, now I’m back to the way I used to be!”… and then a few days later, I feel better still! I hesitate to say I’m totally better, as I recognize that …

Hocus Pocus 2 Watch Party

MagicBookBrownies

Last weekend, I hosted a watch party for the Hocus Pocus sequel. Back in September, my friend Elizabeth texted a few of us when we first heard a sequel was coming out, and I said I’d be happy to host a watch party. It had been so long since I’d hosted a party, and as it turns out, my friends really missed them! I had a number of people tell me how excited they were for me to organize events again. Anyway, this was no big extravaganza – I had less than a dozen people attend. But I had a …

Race Recap: Reunion 5K

Laura_Wins_2022_Reunion_5K

Earlier this month, I headed to Ithaca, NY for my fifteen year Cornell reunion. I cannot believe I have been out of college for fifteen years already! My five year Reunion was a ton of drinking. Makes sense… we were in our 20s. My ten year Reunion, though, surprised me by also being a lot of drinking. (Though that year, I at least made it to the Saturday morning Reunion 5K, whereas I woke up still drunk and skipped it at the 5 year.) This year, I figured that most people would be at Reunion with spouses and kids in …

Reacting to Another Fire

Morrison_from_Red_Rocks_Trading_Post_Trail

Yesterday started out well. First thing in the morning, Sadie and I stopped by Red Rocks Park for a trail run. I’ve spent the first three months of the year either focused on fire recovery and not working out, or up in the mountains to ski, so this was actually my first trail run of the year. And it was a good one! I had been checking out several options on AllTrails, but most reports indicated that mud was still a problem. My boyfriend had suggested that Red Rocks is usually so hard packed it doesn’t get muddy, and he …

Final Hurrah of the Skison: Steamboat, Bluebird Backcountry, and Avalanche Preparedness

Bluebird_Backcountry_Top_Of_Wapiti_Way

This weekend, I headed out to the mountains – but not to the Vail Valley. Instead, my boyfriend and I headed out to the Steamboat Springs area, where we spent Friday skiing Steamboat resort, and Saturday and Sunday trying out backcountry skinning / skiing… and taking an avalanche preparedness course (AIARE1). Friday at Steamboat was awesome. By the time we dropped Sadie off at “doggie camp” (her amazing boarding facility) and made the beautiful drive out to Steamboat, we didn’t get on the mountain until about 10:30am. I was a little bummed we were so late, since we were having to …
